New frontiers of safety assurance
Software plays a more relevant role for safety assurance than ever before, including assurance against safety incidents due to security vulnerabilities. Open Architectures enabling intensive connectivity, open systems of systems, cloud-based control, over-the-air-updates, possibly including third-party-vendor apps lead to new challenges for safety and security assurance.
This leads to the following questions to be discussed at SafeComp2022:
- Is there a red line limiting the technological freedom acceptable from a safety viewpoint and how can we identify it?
- How do we assure safety and safety-related security in spite of these new technologies without impeding their benefits?
- Do we need new principles and paradigms for safety and security assurance?

The 41st international SafeComp conference (Safety, Reliability and Security of Computer-based Systems), which drew to an end in Munich on September 9, gave 156 experts from 18 countries an opportunity to focus intensively on is-sues regarding the safety and reliability of computer-based systems.
The 41st edition of this long-running conference was hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS in cooperation with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).

Established in 1979 by the European Workshop on Industrial Computer Systems, Technical Committee 7 on Reliability, Safety and Security (EWICS TC7), SafeComp has contributed to the progress of the state-of-the-art in dependable application of computers in safety-related and safety-critical systems.

safety, security and reliability of critical computer applications.
